TCP/IP Diagnostics

SerialView - TCP/IP aware Serial Debugger

Klos produce these useful  DOS based packages.  SerialView  intercepts a serial line, filters, saves and displays the data as it passes.  But that is not all - SerialView knows about the most popular PPP and SLIP protocols so is able to display not just the character stream but to display it laid out so you can easily understand the packets content.  Not only that but you can assign names to hosts and nodes to further simplify your analysis of the data.

Packets collected by SerialView

And now  selecting packet 18.....

A packet analysed by SerialView

Of great value both to get a basic understanding of PPP,  when initially developing a PPP application to check that all the packets are legal and subsequently  to test applications when you want to know what is going on and why.

SerialView supports....LCP, PAP, SPAP, CHAP, MSCHAP, Multilink, IPCP, IPXCP, NBFCP, ATCP, CCP, TCP/UDP/IP, SNMP, IPX/SPX/NCP and if that is not enough for you - it lets you define your own protocol decoders.

All these Mnemonics beyond you ?  Well I know how you feel so I put together a Plain Man's Guide to TCP/IP Mnemonics  - all I have to do now is understand the explanations !

PacketView - Ethernet Debugger

Most Ethernet adapters can be put into what is known as "promiscuous" mode in which they collect all passing packets - well PacketView saves and displays this data. PacketView knows both the Ethernet frame structure and the TCP/IP protocols so is able to display not just the character stream but to display it laid out so you can best understand the packets.  As with SerialView you can assign names to hosts and nodes to further simplify your analysis of the data.

PacketView supports the following transport mechanisms - Ethernet: 802.2, 802.3, SNMP, Ethernet II, Token-Ring: 802.x, ARCNET, FDDI, Asynchronous SLIP, PPP, and more.

PacketView supports the following protocols - Link Control Protocol (LCP), Password Authentication Protocol (PAP), Shiva Password Authentication Protocol (SPAP), Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP), IP Control Protocol (IPCP), IPX Control Protocol (IPXCP), VJ Compression (VJCOMP), Compressed IPX (CIPX), NetBIOS Frames Control Protocol (NBFCP), AppleTalk Control Protocol (ATCP), Compression Control Protocol (CCP), Encryption Control Protocol (ECP), Multilink.  And TCP/UDP/IP/ICMP, ARP/RARP, BootPC, BootPS,  SNMP/SNMP Trap, DNS, BOOTP/DHCP, RPC, NetBIOS, AppleTalk, Vines IP, GRE, Netware IP, DCE RPC, ONC RPC, IPX/SPX/NCP/RIP/SAP, SMB, XNS, IP Tunnel again with the ability to add your own protocol decoder.

PacketView Pro now captures packets from multiple network interfaces simultaneously making monitoring of all interfaces to/from a router, bridge or hub possible.

To determine packet latency and loss through a large network PacketView Pro now supports, with the optional TimeStamper, GPS provided time stamps.  Packets may be collected simultaneously at multiple locations then merged and accurate packet latency and packet loss may be determined.
