Low-cost USB interfaced ROM emulator

RomEm^®, now available from Computer Solutions, is a low-cost USB-interfaced ROM emulator which provides up to 8 Mbit of RAM-based EPROM emulation so that code can be developed and debugged without burning EPROMs.

The system allows users to rapidly download code from a PC's USB interface, test a target system, analyse operating states and make corrections instantly.

Unlike dedicated development systems costing thousands of pounds, RomEm is small and inexpensive. It can be used to develop code for virtually any type of system as it is processor independent.

RomEm control software is available in two styles: a Windows (98, 2000 or XP) GUI application and a Windows console-mode command-line version. The Windows GUI can be used to control up to four USB RomEm devices simultaneously. The command-line software can be used for either USB or parallel-port devices.

The system emulates EPROM types 2716 to 27080, and configurations are available for 1 Mbit (128k × 8), 4 Mbit (512k × 8) and 8 Mbit (1024k × 8). Units can be cascaded for additional memory or different word sizes.

Typical access time is 100 ns, and with the USB interface a total of 1 Mbyte of code can be downloaded in 1.5 seconds. Battery backup provides non-volatile storage if the unit is disconnected from the PC or if power to the target is turned off.
