Free web resource speeds 8051 CPU selection
Computer Solutions has developed a free web-based resource to speed the selection of devices from the popular 8051 microcontroller family.
Known as Micro-Search, the new system offers a definitive and unbiased selection guide for 8051 products, which are now available from multiple manufacturers in over 540 variants, and will reduce the time that designers spend sorting through numerous unsuitable 8051 specifications.
Designers are able to start from one of a number of pre-sorted lists that contains comprehensive details of all the processors that match their requirements. A variety of selection criteria are available, including number of I/O bits, timers or UARTS, power consumption, clock speed, RAM/ROM size etc., enabling users to quickly find the right device even for the most demanding design.
The specifications listed in Micro-Search are formatted in such a way that direct comparisons can be made between 30 different manufacturers' devices. Incorporating a database of all variants from every known 8051 manufacturer, Micro-Search provides an unbiased source that enables designers to quickly identify the most suitable chips before using links to access more detailed specifications on the manufacturers' web sites.
In addition to these primary criteria, Micro-Search enables the user to select a device based on more specific requirements. Details such as I/O features, idle current consumption, operating temperature range, packaging type or multi-sourcing can all be used to ensure that the best device is quickly identified.
"With the availability of an ever increasing number of 8051 types, it is becoming difficult for designers to find the right device", comments Chris Stephens, Managing Director of Comsol: "There is a great deal of data being published but very little that is comparative between manufacturers. I have spoken to engineers who have had to download 20 or 30 large data files, only to find that for one reason or another the chip is unsuitable."
"Micro-Search solves a growing problem for engineers, as chip manufacturers now use the Internet as the primary source of detailed component data", adds Chris Stephens: "Data books and even CDs are becoming things of the past, but the volume of data required to do a comprehensive survey is prohibitive. With so many manufacturers offering 8051 chips, it is almost impossible to find the best solution without spending many weeks browsing the web on chip selection alone. By using Micro-Search, the designer can concentrate on the small subset of chips that satisfy his needs, and is presented with links to complete data on those chips."
When they have chosen their processor, designers can link to Comsol's 'Supported Chips Directory', which provides details of the development tools available for that device.
Micro-Search is part of Comsol's 'Embedded Information Zone', a growing reference directory for designers which can be accessed at https://www.computer-solutions.co.uk/info-zone.htm
